Sixes Rules
Fall 2025
General Format:
*5 v 5 (5 field players plus a goalie)
*Faceoffs/Draws are done at the start of each half only
*NO offsides (players are offense and defense)
*Mandatory Pass Rule - for Elementary Division Boys & Girls ONLY (not older ages). There must be 1 attempted pass on the offensive end before a shot on goal
*3 yard rule - Players must be within 3 yards (not 5) of man to initiate contact
*Restarting- All players must be 5 yards away from the ball carrier before restarting play
*Limited stick checking, with only lift checks, poke checks and stick checks below an opponent’s shoulders - NO ONE HANDED CHECKS FOR ELEMENTARY DIVISION
*NO BODY CHECKING - Some body contact is permitted, but body checking is illegal-
*Check to Head/Neck - mandatory penalty of 2-3 minutes; ejection if vicious or intentional
Game Length:
*Two 15 minute running clock halves with a 2 minute half time and a 3 minutes between game times
*No timeouts
*Overtime - None in regular season play.
Restart After Goal:
Following a goal, the GK must retrieve the bal within 5 seconds and then has an additional 5 seconds to clear the ball after the official whistle starts
Out of Bounds:
Same as field game, including closest to the ball after a shot brings it back into bounds
Mercy Rule: 4 or more goals, the losing team will be permitted to get a “free clear” from goalie to their own team
Positioning of Players and Starting Sixes:
When a team has all of it’s players on the field, it shall place one faceoff/draw player at the center of the field. All other players must be even with the end line before the faceoff/draw. When the whistle sounds to start play, all players are released, except goalkeepers, who are confined to their crease until possession is gained. All released players must play the ball before possession (not the body).
Boys Rules:
-NO Long poles (short sticks only)
- 1 pass requirement for Elementary division
-No one handed checks for elementary division
Minor Fouls - 30 second non-releasable
Major Fouls - 1 minute non-releasable
Expulsion Fouls - misconduct, fighting, intentional body contact/stick with head or neck
Girls:
Elementary - Modified Checking applies; as well as 3 second good defense
Middle School - Transitional Checking
